In the Hawkesbury region alone, we see an average of 400 kangaroo-related accidents every single year. These aren’t just statistics—they represent a serious risk to our community.

NRMA Insurance data shows that kangaroos are involved in half of all wildlife-related injury crashes, and AAMI Insurance reports that they account for a staggering 90% of animal-related claims.

The Hawkesbury Environment Network (HEN) has received a Community Road Safety Grant from Transport for NSW. This grant program supports community groups to deliver small-scale, local projects that increase road safety awareness and encourage safer behaviours on our roads.
Our ‘Drive Kangaroo Aware’ campaign aims to reduce the risk of motor vehicle collisions with kangaroos across the Hawkesbury. The project will identify high-risk areas and provide practical education on safe driving behaviours to help protect both people and wildlife.

This project aligns with the Transport for NSW 2026 Road Safety Action Plan to halve deaths and reduce serious injuries on our roads by 2030. By focusing on Safe People, Safe Roads, and Safe Speeds, we’re working to protect both our motorists and our local kangaroo population.
